Visitor Services & Requirements to Ngamba Chimpanzee Island Sanctuary

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary was established in 1998 by the Chimpanzee Sanctuary & Wildlife Conservation Trust (CSWCT) a body of national and international coservation personalities headed by the reknown Jane Goodall. CSWCT is geared towards "developing and implementing a long-term strategy for conservation of chimpanzees and their habitat, with the immediate purpose of establishing a chimpanzee sanctuary on Ngamba Island in Lake Victoria...." The Island was acquired for the care and welfare of entrusted chimpanzee animals while conserving the ecosystem of the island. Main activities include welfare of individual captive chimpanzees entrusted to its care, long-term management of a sanctuary for confiscated individuals that cannot be returned to the wild, intervention to assist individual chimps in the wild when deemed necessary, conservation education of the general public with particularly emphasis on chimpanzees, ecotourism, community participation, capacity building through training, and building viable national, regional and international partnerships on chimpanzee conservation.

Visitor Activities:

Visitors to Ngamba Chimpanzee Island Sanctuary can do any of the following activities:

  • Morning or afternoon feeding, of the chimpanzees from the visitors platform area along the edge of the sanctuary fence,
  • do Chimpanzee Walks,
  • hear an informative talk by sanctuary staff,
  • enjoy lunch (optional extra on full day trips),
  • swimming on the equator,
  • viewing a neighbouring fishing village,
  • bird watching, other wildlife encounters,
    or just sunbathe and relax.

Chimpanzee Walks

Chimp walks in the forest require some medical conditions to be fulfilled: Vaccination against -Hepatitis A&B, Measles; Meningococcal meningitis (menomune vaccine); Polio; Tetanus; Yellow fever. A negative TB test before arrival is also required. Minimum age for the walks is 18 years, Maximum age is 65 years, but the latter category is also dependant on size and fitness level of the person. Clients stay at the Ngamba Island Camp, a 4-tent mid-range Camp directly overlooking the Lake. The entrance fees paid goes towards looking after the chimpanzees.

Note: fees for chimpanzee walks - USD 350 per walk; and Caregiver for a day: US$150 per person per 24 hour day - these two activity prices are not included in safari cost.

Speedboat Departure Times - Half day trips
Morning viewing 9.00am -1.00pm
Afternoon viewing 12.45pm- 5.00pm.

Speedboat 1 - capacity of up to 5 passengers. An 18 foot sea going ski boat with single foam filled hull, powered by a Yamaha 140HP outboard engine, sun canopy and life jackets on board.

Speedboat 2 - capacity of up to 10 passengers. A 25 foot speed boat, powered by 2 X Yamaha 140HP outboard engines, sun canopy and life jackets on board.

Speedboat 3 - capacity of up to 14 passengers. A 36 foot boat powered by 2 X Yamaha 140HP outboard engines with sun & rain canopy and life jackets on board.

Traditional Motorised Boat - capacity 20 passengers. A Traditional Motorised boat modified for tourist traveling on Lake Victoria

Full day trips
08.00am - 3.00pm
10.30am - 5.00pm

The boat ride to/from the Island is approximately 45 minutes (speedboat) and 1½ hours (traditional boat) one-way depending on the weather. The island tour lasts about 1½ hours but can be extended if required. Contact us for Overnight trips.

Life jackets and rain suites are provided for all on board our boats.

ChimpanzeeNgamba Island Chimpanzee sanctuary is located 23 km southeast of Entebbe. The island forms part of the many islands, about 15 of them, and neighbours the Ssese islands group within the Lake Victoria Mass. Accessibility to the island is either by a speedboat (45 minutes ride) or a traditional canoe that takes 1hr30 minutes. Do swimming, bird watching, and relaxation, including chimp viewing.
